In cyber security circles they say, just because someone might bash down your door, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t lock it.
The truth is, it’s practically impossible to prevent all data breaches. Hackers have shockingly effective techniques, including reading heat signatures or even the blinking green lights on your server, to steal your information. Still it is useful to effectively “lock” your digital doors by being up to date on security protocols.
Strategies such as rotating your passwords often and always using two step verification systems are a good start toward being more fully conscious of ways to protect your data. Reading up on what attacks are becoming more common, including the growth in ransomware and cryptocurrency mining, may keep you and your company from falling into specific traps.
One further way to be safer online is to work anonymously as much as is possible. The infographic below has a number of methods to follow to make sure you are not as susceptible to attack when at work. For example, incognito browsing means you aren’t collecting potentially dangerous third-party cookies.
Using the major available browsers like Google and Bing are common ways that outside sources can track your data. It is safer to use less well known browsing options that have more security. Tor, for example, though associated with the “deep web”, may be a slightly slower option, but will not inform potential data miners of your location or your activity.
